Trauma, whether experienced as a one-off event, or as a set of repeated events over a long period of time, affects everyone differently. Some people may go on to experience brief and temporary psychological effects which resolve over time, and others may go on to develop long-term challenges with managing their inner and outer experiences in the world and the people in it.
How trauma affects an individual depends on many factors, including the biological temperament of the individual, the type of trauma experienced, the age at which the traumatic event/s occurred, the personal meaning an individual attributes to the trauma, and whether the individual had effective coping skills and other people to help them when the traumatic event/s occurred.
Individuals with unresolved trauma may be diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex post traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD), dissociative disorders, functional neurological disorder (FND), personality disorder, depression and anxiety. The impact of trauma can be subtle, harmful and destructive for the individual, and can have long-lasting negative impacts on how a person views themselves, their relationships and is detrimental to quality of life.
Anxiety, fear, anger, guilt, sadness, shame, numbness, dissociation and hopelessness are a few experiences that can linger and create suffering in our lives. Plan Be Psychology will support you to understand, accept and overcome these experiences, walk next to you on your journey of grief and healing, and work alongside of you to scaffold a life guided by your wisdom and filled with meaning and purpose.
